Sink Hole

May 4, 2006

I live in an old building that is unsafe for many reasons, not the least of which is the fire safety directions for those living on the top floor is to fill their bathtubs with water (whether it’s because they can then stay in the bathtub and avoid fire or because the writers knew they had no hope of getting out and thought at least the firefighters would have some extra water to work with I don’t know). But I’m starting to think there is something structurally unsound in my room.

It’s kind of like a sink hole, with a gravitational pull, which I know sounds unusual. But there’s a spot in my living room that I keep falling into and then I can’t get back out. The fact that this particular spot is where my couch resides is, I believe, just a coincidence.

I know this doesn’t sound like much of a problem to you, but I’m telling you, it is proving highly problematic. It is the second to last week of classes and as I have been sick for the past couple of weeks I am behind. Which means, I don’t have time to fall into a sink hole and not be able to get out. I have work to do.

It’s not even that I fall in and fall asleep. No, I’ve been known, over the past few days, to fall onto my couch and simply lie there for hours on end. Not watching TV (though I have done that as well), not reading, not sleeping, just lying. And I swear, I’m not depressed, I just can’t get up. It’s so comfy. And my work, well, it’s not.

I’m thinking about taking the cushions off the couch so it wouldn’t be so comfy to fall into it, but I’m pretty sure they would replace themselves within 24 hours, so I’m not sure it’s worth the effort. For now, I survive only by doing all my work in the library, which is far enough away from my room (barely) that I don’t feel the gravitational pull (too often). My life is hard.

Is that why my desk chair keeps rolling across the room?

I have just recently stumbled onto your blog and have really enjoyed reading.

I know just how you feel…it’s not anything really other than it feels great for the moment to procrastinate. However, it completely bits when you start stressing because there is so much to do at the last minute…

I think we have some things in common. :0)

    oh my god, me too!
only my sinkhole is in my bedroom. i must not go into that room for any reason whatsoever or i am compelled to lie in my bed and meditate on the virtues of 400 thread count sheets. it’s horrible.
maybe you should put all your school books on your couch so that when you fall in, you’ll have reading material.

i’m vicariously longing for the end of this semester for you!
