Explorations
November 20, 2006
We’re in D.C. this weekend for an academic conference and while Adam keeps reminding me I really ought to go here the papers and lectures on topics I hope to study one day, I have been exploring the city instead. We realized the Metro runs directly under our hotel and so each morning before I have to relieve Adam at our job for the weekend, I head out for a new place.
I love the Metro. When I lived in Boston as a freshman, the subway system was one of the most overwhelming and complicated things I encountered. But, having mastered that particular mode of transportation, I feel equipped to navigate any metro system (though buses still confuse me to no end). Washington’s subway is one of the cleanest and nicest I’ve seen. So far I’ve been to Dupont Circle where I bought a book at one of two very cool bookstores I found and a pair of pants on sale at Ann Taylor Loft. Today I went to Union Station, which was amazing. The train and metro still run through the station, but there are also stores and restaurants galore. While there are the traditional stores you can find in most malls, there were also some crafty type stores. I found a travel cribbage board made of beautiful wood in an Appalachian Arts store and coveted many things in a South American store.
We live right on the edge of a city now, but the subway system stinks and somehow living in a city always makes it harder to see the really funky places in your vicinity. It’s fun to be someplace new for a weekend and I suppose I can always read the papers and debates I’m missing in a journal someday. Some pictures are here.
