Doctor, Oh Doctor
November 30, 2006
It is fair to say, I think, that I have not had the best of luck with doctors since coming to Decatur. There were initially many insurance problems as I had NY State insurance and lived in Georgia, which is complicated and caused me to end up at a Doc-in-a-box with a overeager fondness for butt shots, of which I have had far too many of in the past two and a half years.
Fortunately, our lovely friend Marci came to Columbia last year and brought with her her brilliant doctor of a husband. This has been extremely beneficial for us, especially since they live two minutes from our apartment. We have had many a brief check-up in the kitchen with one or the other of us displaying rashes or bruises and asking what to do. After many such kitchen sessions, we finally made real appointments and saw him in an office with a large list of questions about our health issues.
For me, this resulted in a referral to a podiatrist for my ailing flat feet, which are desperately in need of new orthodics (at the very least). I got to see said podiatrist yesterday and told him of my feet woes and pain and without any hesitation he gave me two shots of cortisone in my feet before making molds for new orthodics.
Now, I am not a fan of shots. And, I am not a fan of medicine in general unless desperately needed. So, these two large needles full of steroids coming at my feet was utterly overwhelming and terrifying. Might I insert here that I was not asked if I wanted said shots, which I did not, nor was I fully informed of what the shot was of until I asked.
I will admit that this doctor was very efficient - I was in and out in half an hour. But, my feet hurt desperately for 12 hours before the pain subsided and I am not sure the shot was entirely necessary.
All this to say, family friends excluded, Georgia doctors (granted the affordable ones) are not my friends.

Having my own foot issues this semester I have found a great podiatrist if you ever feel the desire to switch

Sarah,
Wish I had known about your feet issues, we could have shared experiences. I too was surprised by a podiatrist coming at me with a large needle, not explaining at all what that shot would feel like. I’ve never felt pain like that!!! I know have 3 different pairs of orthotics depending upon what shoes I wear. We’ll have to keep each other updated….
