A Fish Named Dawg
June 24, 2006
Adam left last night to return some wedding presents that we decided we could live without. The objective was to return the items, get the cash and bring it home.
Oddly enough that didn’t happen.
Instead, Adam came home with our first pet: a beta fish we affectionately named Dawg. He is cuteness personified in a fish. Not to disrespect the beta, but we would much rather have a flesh and blood pet than a scales in water pet, but given our current living situation, this is the best we can do. And we love him.
He seems a little lonely, but beta fish can’t live with other fish or they kill them, so he entertains himself much like a lazy dog might, floating around, sleeping, jumping when you nudge his living space, eating, more sleeping, you get the idea.
Dawg (pronounced Dog) may seem like a strange name for a fish, but we have our reasons, which I will now explain. First, we like simple, obvious names. I have a teddy bear whom we refer to simply as Bear. Second, Dog means Fish in Hebrew (spelled differently of course, you know, in Hebrew).
Ergo, we have a fish named Dawg (the spelling being my own invention to add some character to the story).

There are a number of fish you can keep with a Beta. For example in my 10 gallon tank I have 6 neon tetras that I keep w/ 1 male Beta. Tetras do real good with them. Mostly they are a calm fish just can get aggravated. Actually I have had a number of smaller fish kill Bettas. Anyhow I am sure you are smarter enough to do a search on it or talk to your local pet store for advice on setting up a tank.

i took my six year old niece to the petshop, to buy her a fish as a thankyou to her family for having me to stay. We bought the fish, and as we walked out, i said “what will you call it, steph?”, and she answered “Dog”.
she wasn’t quite as enamoured as i’d hoped.
after the third “Dog” died in a short space of time, she asked whether she could have a mars bar as a pet instead.
she dealt with grief well.

As soon as I read the title to your post, this little voice in my head began reciting: “who is he, he is she, me is who and dog is fish.”
If you were still going to be a Hebrew TA, you could have taken Dawg to Hebrew class so he could learn about the origin of his name (unless his memory is no better than that of a goldfish).
